HOLLOW DECK is the musical collaboration of MIA FRIEDMAN and ANDY ALLEN. The two reconnoiter dulcet songs and clattering improvisations, making use of banjo, gourd banjo, fiddle, guitar, tenor sax, clarinet, flute, drum machine, and tape manipulations. The duo presents music that fluctuates seamlessly between tight dissonance and open harmony. Straddling the worlds of beautiful folk songs and experimental sound collage. Friedman is a virtuosic fiddler and singer as well as a composer and educator. She is largely influenced by American roots music and old-time Appalachian traditions, and blends this with contemporary music in her compositions. Allen has been navigating his way through raw and clangorous improvisation tagged as “free jazz in the spirit of lo-fi punk” in his solo project Friendship Ceremonies and in collaboration with musicians like Arkm Foam, Matt Robidoux.
Byron Colley describes their music as “easily transcending any real or imaginary boundaries of what’s possible to do with just four hands. The results are as amazing as they are hard to categorize.”
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Brookline Commission for the Arts and the Boston Cultural Council, both local agencies which are funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The Boston Cultural Council is administrated by the Mayor’s Office of Arts + Culture.
