About the artist
Integrating saxophone, flute, feedback and electronics, electroacoustic pioneer and dedicated improvisor BONNIE KANE describes her work as avant-core: an extreme energy mix of psychedelic rock, hardcore, and avant-garde jazz.
She was influenced by an unusually early exposure to Sun Ra, studies with Sonny Simmons, Paul McCandless, Glenn Moore, Ralph Towner (Oregon), and Jon Raskin (Rova Saxophone Quartet). A stint in the original Club Foot Orchestra, whose members then included Snakefinger (The Residents) and Eric Drew Feldman (Capt Beefheart), introduced her to electronic processing for horns, and brief study at Mills College under Anthony Braxton solidified her direction.
A bandleader since the 1990s, with over 40 releases, those she has performed and recorded with include: John Spencer, Tatsuya Nakatani, Chris Forsyth, Kevin Shea, Shayna Dulberger, Jeffrey Hayden Shurdut, Blaise Siwula, Ernesto Diaz-Infante, Chris Welcome, Federico Ughi, Walter Wright, Andrea Pensado, Chris Strunk, and John Loggia. New collaborations are continually evolving.
She has toured nationally and worldwide, performing extensively throughout the Eastern US. Her bands have been known for “scalp shearing shows”, “feats of bravery”, and for music that is “…the algebra of heart, brain, and soul.” A conductor of energy, her music is not for the timid.
