VENERATE THE PLOUGH
"From the door a stone stair curves upward spirally, passing two landings, and terminating in a third one, its steps all shapeless and hollow by the tread of so many generations of the seekers of knowledge. Life has flowed like water down this winding stair. There stood two people in flannels, but apart from their dress no one could look at their alert faces without seeing that they were open air men — men whose minds and tastes turned naturally to all that was robust. They plunged into formidable, dust-covered volumes, adorned with great texts of that strange, internal kingdom of which we are the hapless and helpless monarchs. There is no return of the singular sound, when suddenly there broke out of the silence of the night a hoarse cry, a positive scream — the call of a person who is moved and shaken beyond all control."
— pieced together from Arthur Conan Doyle's "Lot No. 249" by Seamus R. Williams
