About the artists
Simon Whetham explores the energy and effects of sound, from resonance and psychoacoustic effects to the transduction of sound as movement and light. Recent projects find him repurposing obsolete consumer technology in kinetic performances and installations, notably "Made to Malfunction" and "Successive Actions".
Yoona Kim is a Boston and South Korea based ajaeng performer, Composer, and Improvisor who creates music based upon traditional aesthetics inherent in Korean music. Her work is focused on the relationship between Korean music, time, and absolute truth through sound. She is the Artistic Director of Moderngagok which is a contemporary music group in South Korea. She has performed throughout India, Vietnam, North America and Europe. She studied Musicology and ajaeng performance at Seoul National University in South Korea. Recently, she has completed a master's degree in Contemporary Improvisation at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
Variant State is a project instigated by Howard Martin (reeds), Jesse Kenas Collins (trumpet, reeds, feedback objects), and Michael Rosenstein (amplified surfaces and objects, modified field recordings, sensors.) Working In various configurations, they explore the interactions of acoustic instrumentation, electronics, multiphonics, abraded and degraded recordings, and feedback within collectively improvised settings. Their open-form sonic investigations draw on aesthetics of spontaneous interaction and dynamic cooperative structures. For this performance, they will be a duo of Jesse Kenas Collins and Michael Rosenstein.
