Non-Event and Ágora Cultural Architects present a night of cumbia with Frente Cumbiero, one of Colombia’s most electrifying exponents of Nueva Cumbia. Plus, an opening set by guitarist, electronic musician, and improviser, Lautaro Mantilla.

About the Artists

Frente Cumbiero is one of the foremost innovators in the fertile Nueva Cumbia movement. Led by Colombian songwriter and producer Mario Galeano Toro (also a founding member of Ondatrópica and Los Pirañas), Frente Cumbiero’s sound is rooted in traditional cumbia, while incorporating modern influences from jazz, electronic music, tropicália, experimental rock, and dub. Onstage, the quartet focuses on the heavier hitting side of tropical sounds geared for the dancefloor, combining reeds, live percussion and electronics, synths and sequences dubbed live.

Lautaro Mantilla is a Boston-based guitarist, composer, and improviser from Bogotá, Colombia. In his performances, he typically combines guitar, extended vocalization techniques, and homebuilt electronics to create music that is both viscerally affecting and conceptually rigorous. Based in Boston, Lautaro is active in the NY and Boston scenes and is a faculty member of the Contemporary Musical Arts department at New England Conservatory (NEC) and guitar faculty at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Boston. For this show, Lautaro will perform an improvised set mixing noise, groove, cumbia, and dance music.

This performance is co-presented by Non-Event and Ágora Cultural Architects.
